The UN has declared 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’ (IYOM). Millets like ragi, jowar and bajra are gluten-free superfoods that have been part of the Indian diet for centuries. The British didn’t get these small cereals and instead promoted the production of rice, wheat and cash crops such as sugarcane and cotton that could be exported to Europe. However, it is time for millets to make a comeback to our plates. They are more nutritious than rice and wheat, more sustainable for the planet and helpful for small farmers.
